What Inspires Me

I'm inspired by the rapid advancements in natural language processing and various applications of modern artificial intelligence in cancer-related health economic research. I am eager to utilize these advanced modeling techniques on large datasets to better understand challenges that cancer patients and their family experience."

At ACS since 2024

Shu Liu, PhD, serves as a post-doctoral fellow in the Health Services Research team, Surveillance & Health Equity Science department at the American Cancer Society (ACS). He collaborates with other ACS researchers and with scientists at other organizations on initiatives focusing on the economic challenges faced by cancer survivors.

Research focus and accomplishments

Liu’s research focuses on utilizing machine learning techniques to examine big data related to the receipt of cancer care, treatment patterns, and outcomes, as well as on key drivers of the social determinants of health.

He is also interested in the financial hardships experienced by cancer survivors and their families, and the associated adverse health outcomes. For the initial starting period of his postdoctoral fellowship, his research projects include :

  • Natural language processing of analyzing medical credit card agreements and comparing key financial terms between medical and general credit cards
  • Health benefit design: investigating plan changes before and after a cancer diagnosis
  • Healthcare expenditures: Conducting statistical analyses for associations between mortality risks and emergency Medicaid expenditures.
