Why I'm a Cancer Researcher

As a childhood cancer survivor, I understand the importance of making cancer care accessible to all. With insights from my personal history and by analyzing patterns in cancer incidence and survival, I aim to contribute to more equitable cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. Through my work, I strive to ensure that no one is left behind in the fight against cancer."

At ACS since 2024

Kieran Kelly, MPH, serves as an epidemiologist and an associate scientist II in the Surveillance and Health Equity Science within the Cancer Surveillance Research team at the American Cancer Society (ACS). He is currently the managing editor for the fourth edition of the Cancer Atlas.

Research focus and accomplishments

During his Masters program, Kelly worked with Daniel Wiese, PhD, of the ACS Cancer Disparities Research program, to investigate these issues in Atlanta, Georgia:

  • Comparison of neighborhood-level gentrification status based on a variety of sociodemographic and built-environment indicators
  • Differences in greenspace change by gentrification status
  • Variations in the prevalence of obesity
Kelly's current research interests focus on emerging global cancer trends among young adults (25-50 years) through cancer surveillance research.
