She has led multiple studies examining incarceration and access to cancer care and outcomes, such as receipt of cancer screenings and cancer mortality, at individual, family, and community levels.
Her work also examines health insurance disparities, including the effects of provisions of the Affordable Care Act and the growing inequities after the introduction of new high-costs therapies.
In addition, she actively collaborates with colleagues on topics on economic burden and financial hardship among cancer survivors.
Zhao has received various awards for her research, including the ASCO Conquer Cancer Merit Award from the ASCO annual meeting and the ASCO Quality Care Symposium.
