American Cancer Society Awards More Than $98 Million in New Research Grants in the Fall of 2024

New Research Grants Bring ACS’s Total Investment in New Research to $132.8 million in FY2024

As the calendar has changed to the new year, the American Cancer Society (ACS) would like to extend our congratulations to all of our newly funded cancer researchers whose grants went into effect on January 12025 or will begin in the coming weeks and months. ACS is honored to partner with these innovative scientists as they endeavor to move the fields of cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship forward in order to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.

Reflecting a robust grant-making season, ACS awarded 245 new or renewed research grants between August 1 and December 31, 2024. Grants were awarded to investigators at 106 institutions across the country and total more than $98 million in new research funding. This slate of new grants includes the previously announced recipients of the Yosemite-ACS Awards, the new Catalyst Awards that were announced in August 2024, and all of the research grants awarded through our standard grant mechanisms including Postdoctoral Fellowships, Research Scholar Grants, Discovery Boost Grants, and more. A full list of all the new awards included in this grant slate can be found on cancer.org

“Altogether, the American Cancer Society invested over $132 million in new cancer research in 2024, including this sizable Fall 2024 grant slate and the awards made earlier in the year. This represents a significant investment in the most promising cancer research being done in the United States today, regardless of cancer type,” said Dr. Christina Annunziata, who leads the Extramural Discovery Science team at the American Cancer Society. “By funding studies ranging from basic molecular research all the way through interventional trials, we are able to support work targeted at benefiting patients and their families in the short term while laying the foundation for future advances as well.”

The American Cancer Society is the largest non-government, non-profit funder of cancer research in the United States. With an investment of more than five billion dollars since 1946, the ACS has a legacy of supporting life-saving cancer research, including supporting the work of 53 researchers who have gone on to win the Nobel Prize for their work.

“We take our commitment to funding cutting edge cancer research seriously and intend to do so well into the future,” said Dr. William Dahut, Chief Science Officer at the American Cancer Society. “We are excited about the innovative projects we were able to fund in 2024 and look forward growing this investment in the new year. We are also thrilled to welcome these new grantees into our ACS Research Family and wish them the best of luck with their important work.”
